Making Room for Love: A Guided Meditation to Release Old Hurts

Valentine's Day is right around the corner and it can be a tricky day for folks.  Whether we're in a relationship or not, this can be a day that reminds us of past hurts and pains.  We might remember the ways in which people hurt us or disappointed us.  Maybe we think about how we have hurt others.   While being able to see our past patterns so we can change them is very helpful, holding on to the pain of the past can be very destructive to the possibility of new relationships.

Even people who understand the constriction that carrying around all this emotional baggage can bring can have a very difficult time letting it go.  Of course, this is because we think that we can simply tell ourselves that logically we should let it go and be able to.

   Fives drive us forward with their sharp minds capable of great problem solving and insight.  They can be very drawn towards science and math while others are attracted to art.  No matter where their interest lies, you will find them thinking of new ways to innovate and explore.  I think of them as intellectual explorers diving deep into a particular area or two and becoming Experts.  (In contrast to Sevens, who cover more breadth than depth.)

    You might be a Five if most of the following statements describe you:

1. I can easily spend a lot of time by myself.  

2. I enjoy learning, usually through observing or reading.  

3. I could be called a "nerd."  

4. I prefer the company of a few close friends to big groups of people.

Fours are the artists of the world bringing a highly personal approach that can be as easily at home with joy as it is with despair.  They live to experience themselves deeply and long for others to see them for who they really are.   They are often known as Romantics.

1. It is very important that you are understood by others. 

2. You experience big shifts in your mood.  

3. You can enjoy being in a melancholy or sad space.  

4. Your intuition serves as a strong guide for you.  

5. You enjoy being seen as unique.  

6. You may find yourself longing for what other people have.

    Threes are the task masters of the world.   Give them a job and they will complete it with a singleminded focus.   They are people for whom the Nike slogan, "Just do it!" comes second nature.  They are often referred to as the Achievers.

    You might be a Three if most of the following statements describe you:

1. You are always busy.  

2. You would rather be at work than anywhere else. 

3. You are not particularly interested in talking about your personal life.  

4. People respecting you is very important.

    Twos are the heart of the Enneagram, connecting deeply with other people, seeing their needs and working hard to help others.  They remind me of the Good Samaratin who went out of his way to help a stranger on the road with no regard for the consequences.  They are most often referred to as the Helper.

    You might be a Two if most of the following statements could describe you:

1. Relationships are the most important thing to you.  

2. You have difficulty asking for what you need.  

3. You spend most of your time taking care of other people.  

4. You am very tuned into other people's emotional states.  

5. You am more comfortable giving than receiving. 

6. You often find myself trying to win people over.

    Ones might be described as the moral compass of the enneagram and have been called the Reformers by Riso and Hudson.  They have a very strong desire to improve themselves and the world around them and they are willing to do the work that it requires. 

    You might be a One if most of the following statements could describe you:

1. You believe that rules are meant to be followed.

2. You are highly organized and somewhat confused by other people's lack of organization.

3. You have a strong sense of values that lead you to easily define what's right and wrong.

Using the Enneagram as a Guide to Wellness (Part 2)

    Whether you are seeking to make a big change in your life or a small one, the Enneagram can provide a powerful tool for assisting you in this effort.   In part, this happens as we realize that there are other people just like us.   We don't have to think that we are the only one like us out there. And in the process, it can help us to understand the differences in other people around us.  In the end, we come to see clearly that change happens in different ways for people depending on the deep patterns that have formed throughout our lives. Change is much easier when we work with these patterns rather than trying to butt heads with them.

     There are so many books and articles that pretend that they can offer you the one path to creating change in your life.  They tend to offer a series of steps that all too often seem to be out of step with who you are.  The Enneagram provides a powerful tool for creating a path that grows out of your own uniqueness.   

     A bit mysterious in its origins, with some saying it came from ancient mystic traditions, in the last thirty years it has been adapted to be a powerful personality indicator capable of giving people great insights into themselves.

The New Year has begun and many of us are busy making resolutions about our body.  Perhaps we would like to lose weight, gain muscle or change our level of health and vitality.   All of these are great goals that are worth pursuing.

Unfortunately, we often pursue these goals as if we are a general on a battlefield and our bodies are the enemy.  We work out so hard that we hurt ourselves or we eat in ways that are unnatural and sometimes even damaging to our health.   

Ultimately, this battlefield mentality leads us to distrust the regulating mechanisms of our bodies that are designed to keep us healthy.

Why not start the New Year with a whole new relationship to your body.  You can begin with three simple ideas.
